Normally it's made with potatoes, but we experimented. you mix all these together and then roll it out into about a dime size snake and then pinch off 1 inch pieces. have water boiling and drop them in, when they are ready, they'll float to the top. with this recipe, we had to boil them a bit longer, about an extra minute or two.</div><div><br /></div><div>For a sauce, we made a fairly simple walnut blue cheese sauce. It was toasted walnuts, smashed. onions, sour cream and blue cheese.</div><div><br /></div><div>Very tasty and simple, just time consuming to roll out the dough.</div>The Masterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03009385024648806856noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5020886993260951793.post-5900306387670078672011-03-21T10:59:00.000-07:002011-03-21T11:30:39.612-07:00The Journey. In the past few months i have not kept you all updated. sorry.<div><br /></div><div>So, I went to Lithuania. I ate loads of wonderful food and quaffed a massive amount of tasty beers and liquors.</div><div>Some of which were: Cepelinai, which are large potato dumplings with meat inside and are shaped like, Zeppelins! Several variances of herring, one of the most interesting ones was herring marinated in onions and cinnamon. Also herring salad. Some tasty whole salmon, lots of potatoes, gretchka (buckwheat), and one of my new favorite sauces, which is bacon, onions and sour cream. </div><div>On the beer front: Utenos, the dark one of which is awesome. Svyturis, the pilsner and white varieties are definitely of note, and Shnekutis bar, which has a giant variety of wonderful beers from Lithuania.</div><div>Of the liquors, 999. this comes in a couple different flavors and all of them are superb. I was told the vodka is good too, but either I was already too foggy to remember drinking it or I just missed out. </div><div><br /></div><div>After spending a couple of weeks there in Lithuania, my girlfriend Inga and I set out hitchhiking across eastern Europe in the dead of winter.</div><div>Shockingly, this wasn't a tenth as bad as I thought it would be. After we got past Warsaw, there wasn't much snow to speak of and it was actually almost warm in most places.</div><div>We had a fairly comfortable journey and made it back to Tbilisi in 15 days. And this was with spending 2 nights in Warsaw, 2 nights in Brno and 3 nights in Istanbul. Mostly, we got rides pretty quickly in most places, the worst places being at borders.</div><div><br /></div><div>So, in a nutshell, thats what I did for christmas. everything since then has just been the normal Georgia crap. Teaching english, scraping by and eating and drinking as many good things as possible.</div><div><br /></div><div>Until next time,</div><div><br /></div><div>Andrew </div>The Masterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03009385024648806856noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5020886993260951793.post-34299437482242647282010-11-22T05:01:00.000-08:002010-11-22T05:19:26.715-08:00christmasI am going to Lithuania for christmas. <br />There are 2 reasons for me doing this,<br />1. most importantly, to see my girlfriend.<br />2. to eat. <br />I plan on eating as much wonderful food there as possible. It sounds like most of it is meat and potatoes and other starchy foods so this means i should be in heaven.<br />Lots of pork. Lots of caraway. Lots of rye bread. Lots of root vegetables. Hell yes!<br />The weird part of all this is though, We're hitchhiking back from Lithuania to Georgia.<br />This means, traveling through: Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Bulgaria and Turkey!<br />Which also means: EVEN MORE GREAT FOOD! MUAHAHAHAHAHA!<br />Anyways, I will leave you with this link. <br />http://ausis.gf.vu.lt/eka/food/fcont.htmlAndrewhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16128352015417759982noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5020886993260951793.post-25593594430534806072010-11-14T03:05:00.000-08:002010-11-14T03:14:45.277-08:00Shuarma StallsNear where i live on marjanishvili, there are many shuarma stalls. <br />Many of them are pretty good, the one near the metro is decent, the one that looks like a diner is very good and there are a couple of others as weell.<br />But, the best one i have found thus far, has just opened about 50 meters past the populi on marjanishvili.<br />For 3 lari, you can get a super tasty, good sized shuarma. <br />The meat they use is really good, all the vegetables are fresh, the cilantro(coriander) mix they have is delicious, and the guys who run it are super friendly and cool.<br />If you're in the area and hankering for a shuarma, you should defiantly stop in there and get one!<br />I've only ever had the 3 lari offering but that have several different prices from 3 to 12 lari.<br /><br /><br />If anyone knows of other good places, let me know!Andrewhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16128352015417759982noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5020886993260951793.post-70678529354126434732010-11-10T05:52:00.000-08:002010-11-10T06:32:40.102-08:00Living in TbilisiAs of the past couple of weeks, i have been living in Tbilisi.<br />I got a job teaching english privately to several people here in the city a few weeks ago and it's proving to be very challenging and interesting.<br />sometimes it's fun. and i really like most of my students so far.<br /><br />I am living on a very nice street near the center of the city with my friends Ian, Dion and Humfrey in a nice little apartment with a crazy cat, Tatebi.<br /><br />So... yeah. thats about all. I'll write more later and go more into depth about certain things around the city and other happenings.Andrewhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16128352015417759982noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5020886993260951793.post-28784921824811383112010-09-23T06:19:00.000-07:002010-09-23T06:22:58.379-07:00needing ideasHello everyone.<br />I need ideas for stuff to make (that takes into consideration that i live in a tiny town in georgia), i haven't been able to think of anything great lately. I have made some interesting turkish eggplant dishes and brownies but thats about as crazy as i have gotten.<br />I think i'm gonna try out making cornbread and chili soon as it's getting colder. we'll see how THAT turns out.Andrewhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16128352015417759982noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5020886993260951793.post-10378583330584005392010-09-01T02:32:00.000-07:002010-09-01T02:46:40.346-07:00new restaurantthere is a new restaurant in signagi.<br />it's right near the restored part of the wall around the city. it has wonderful views and quite good food.<br />all the seating is in these cute little stick/wicker huts. i'm wondering how long they'll last though.<br />the khinkhali's were average but the mtsvadi was nice and the the fries were almost perfect.<br />the jonjoli and khachapuri were nice also.<br /><br />i haven't cooked anything fun lately. too lazy/bored with ingredient choice.<br />i guess J and I made a bunch of chicken mtsvadi that was really good and some potatoes on the fire as well.<br />the electric and gas have both been super patchy lately so it's been difficult to plan ahead for anything.<br />merg.Andrewhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16128352015417759982noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5020886993260951793.post-89057514866517478432010-08-22T04:34:00.000-07:002010-08-22T04:35:47.014-07:00South Georgia tripLast week a friend of mine hired me to drive him through southern Georgia from the east to the sea.<br />over 4 days we covered 1220 kilometers, went through multiple mountain ranges, helped marshrutkas over precarious mountain passes, and swam in the black sea.<br />Day 1: We started from my hostel in Signagi and went to the town of Udabno near David Gareji. From there we took a rock/dirt road along the Azeri border to Rustavi. We briefly linked up to Tbilisi from there and across to Tetri Tskaro. Along this way there is a wonderful new road being put in that makes driving a real charm! Not like the normal roads here in Georgia that make you feel like you are in a boat during a hurricane! <br />On this new road we went to Tsalka where we camped on the northern point of the reservoir.<br /><br />Day 2: After a very chilly night (we forgot to pack the right camping gear for the mountains... oops), We drove south to Ninotsminda to Akhalkalaki and over to Vardzia in the early afternoon. After spending a couple of hours there and having a very nice lunch, we got back underway up through Akhaltsikhe and through the mountains into Adjara. <br />After the town of Adigeni, the road goes to hell real quick. The roads up and over the mountains in that area are insane. very beautiful, but if you don't have a 4-wheel drive vehicle, you might not make it!<br />Once we finally got out of the mountains, we made it in the very late evening to Batumi, where we stayed at a guesthouse near Green Cove.<br /><br />Day 3: We set out early and were in Ureki by 11am. I have a friend thats living there for the summer so we spent the day on the beach there and got to swim a bunch and massively sunburnt as well. That evening we drove up to Poti and camped by Lake Paliastonli.<br /><br />Day 4: Set out early just as it started raining a bit and drove all the way back to Tbilisi along the main route. Except for some construction in a couple of places, it was quick driving and we were back in Tbilisi by early afternoon.<br /><br />Overall, it was an amazing experience and we saw some of least visited places in Georgia which was a real treat. I highly recommend taking a southerly trip through Kvemo Kartli, Samtskhe-Javaketi and Adjara.<br /><br />Most of what we ate was bread and sausage and a couple of typical Georgian dinners. Not much in the way of anything adventurous or weird. haha!Andrewhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16128352015417759982noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5020886993260951793.post-41067161024190349242010-08-15T05:09:00.000-07:002010-08-15T05:28:12.001-07:00Weekend fest, desert.Over the weekend, I had a group of czechs stay here at my house. <br />We had a good lot of wine and tried a cafe in signagi that i hadn't been to before.<br />It's actually quite nice and very cheap. it should be a place i go back to often.<br />On friday night, My friend Inge and her friend Nienke, who was visiting from holland, came also.<br />We made quite the feast, having mstvadi(pork kebabs),loads of salads, some bean paste dish that was super good, ROASTED, STUFFED WITH CHEESE, PEPPERS THAT WERE WONDERFUL, loads of beers and wines and some whiskey and chacha.<br /><br />it was a very nice evening and everyone got properly drunk and Thor had loads of delicious raw meat for supper.<br /><br />next day, we all piled in the car and went to Davit garedja monastery out in the desertish wilds near the azeri border.<br />Since it was blisteringly hot, Inge and i stayed at the car while the others hiked up and over to the other side, since we'd been there several times before.<br />I drove them all back to Tbilisi and went out for sushi with Inge and Nienke and J. afterwards, we went to my friend Ben's goodbye party. I had a liter size cup for beer. it was the coolest thing ever. I had it refilled a few too many times though. Hahahaha!<br /><br />Good weekend, next week: out into the wild!Andrewhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16128352015417759982noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5020886993260951793.post-81056315006918351282010-08-12T01:53:00.000-07:002010-08-12T02:10:37.086-07:00The last week in foodOver the past week i haven't had any internet so i haven't posed anything.<br />here is quick run down of the food i have made and eaten. pictures will come later.<br /><br />Saturday night: After a long day of hiking and skinny dipping in lagodekhi, Ian, Dion and i came home and made a wonderful layered, baked pasta dish with a tomato and eggplant sauce layer and a white sauce layer. Topped with melted Sulguni cheese. Tavqveri wine from Pheasants Tears went amazingly with it.<br /><br />Sunday night: We all woke up late and spent the day relaxing and went for a walk in the valley near the house and picked a bunch of wild black raspberries. For supper, we grilled eggplants and tomatoes and peppers over the fire on Shampuras (shish kabob sticks) and also potatoes and carrots in tinfoil in the fire itself. the remainder of the Tavqveri and Grant's whiskey for the drinks. After dinner we played Rummy til nice and late with more whiskey/medicine.<br /><br />Monday night: I was on my own so i made fajita-ish peppers and tomatoes and put it on rice. can't remember what i drank. probably a bit of whiskey.<br /><br />Tuesday night: Nothing special. just chopped tomatoes and mixed with basalmic vinegar and black pepper on top of bread.<br /><br />Wednesday: Made spicy baked beans. had to soak the beans over night and then boiled the hell out of them for an hour or so. Then dumped in a load of tomatoes and onions and hot peppers and chili spices. It turned out pretty well.<br /><br />No idea yet what i'm gonna do today. We'll have to wait and see if I want to go into the market and buy stuff or use up what i have left here.Andrewhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16128352015417759982noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5020886993260951793.post-25947388992092657532010-08-06T23:22:00.000-07:002010-08-06T23:28:19.161-07:00drunken masalamade masala last night with dion and ian. didn't take pictures of the food. too bad because it was AWESOME!<br />we also drank way too much of the new tavqveri wine from pheasants tears. the stuff is awesome. totally worth coming to georgia just to try it.<br />we danced, we drank more stuff.<br /><br />now for camping once we get it together today!Andrewhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16128352015417759982noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5020886993260951793.post-71343104006968250462010-08-05T09:21:00.000-07:002010-08-05T10:33:14.204-07:00"French"(georgian) Onion SoupTonight, thanks to my friend Inge Snip, i have decided to make french onion soup tonight.<br />Unfortunately, i didn't have any real beef stock so i had to use bullion. it should work out fine though.<br />First i sauteed a lot of onions until caramelized, then mixed those, some garlic, white wine, a bay leaf and some basil together and simmered it for a long time, until a lot of the water had boiled off. <br />Unfortunately again, i only have sulguni cheese and tone bread. so... not quite the same.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_oIlB4jUsJjI/TFr0szxa-CI/AAAAAAAAAB4/vFs2U0h_dZY/s1600/IMG_5929.JPG"><img style="display:block; spending the day cleaning, doing laundry, making lists and watching storms.<div>i went into tbilisi real fast yesterday to go to goodwill, a grocery store not a thrift store, and stocked up on several items i can't get here in sighnaghi. </div><div>i'm trying to think of small menu offerings, i want stuff that takes no time to make or could be made days in advance. i think if i'm going to do something like this and if i start getting any busier i'm definitely going to need an employee. it's going to be incredibly difficult to run things here and be able to run errands and such.</div><div> </div><div>for the menu i'm thinking of ideas such as, little pizza breads, oil/vinegar dip for bread, some sort of bean dip/hummus and maybe a cheese plate.</div><div>i'll have to see what is feasible and if i have the ability to proceed in this direction. of the last weeklast week i went to tbilisi for several days, it was really fun to stay in the city for a change, it was just too bad that it rained most of the time.<div>the man.u/barca game was good but not great for me, manchester came out really well for the first ten minutes then it went downhill fast. barcelona was clearly the better team. sigh...</div><div>i was able to get a lot of things done there, setting up an account, getting tables and chairs for the terrace, plenty of drinking and eating food.</div><div>on saturday my friend tarek brought his family to stay on their way to lagodeki park. they were great to have, they are nice bunch of people!</div><div>on tuesday i went in to tbilisi to buy blankets as i found i was sorely lacking enough for many guests. i had gvantsa help me because as of yet my georgian language is still almost nonexistent.</div><div>while we were at the market acquiring the blankets i got a call from a shipping company saying that my package from my parents had arrived(yay!).</div><div>so, we had to go to this office and do a bunch of paperwork and then go all the way out to the old airport and do more paperwork before i finally got the package.</div><div>by the time i finally got all that crap done it was time to catch the marshrutka home.</div><div>as i was leaving tbilisi i got a call from tarek asking if they could stat the night again.</div><div>so, they stayed last night and hung out here for a while today.</div><div><br /></div><div>today when i was at the market i found some interesting looking peppers so i bought them and made some salsa.</div><div>THEY"RE HOT! WOO!</div><div>this is some of the best salsa i've ever had. it burns like hell but it's damned delicious!</div><div>now, if only i had some proper corn chips it would be perfect but i'll have to make do with doritos.</div><div>i also made some ice tea today, i'm just waiting for it to cool now. i hope it turns out ok...</div><div>tomorrow i think i'm going back to tbilisi again, since i had to spend my tuesday running around doing paper work i wasn't able to get everything i needed. </div>Andrewhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16128352015417759982noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5020886993260951793.post-3910766456480349842009-05-25T03:10:00.000-07:002009-05-25T03:21:53.121-07:00good weekendi had some people from sweden stay saturday, they were pretty nice.<div><br /></div><div>i hung out with gvantsa on saturday and sunday, on sat. night her uncle vano and i got fairly wasted and then on sunday we just hung out all day.</div><div>it rained a lot so we weren't able to go out and do so much.</div><div>shalva came over to her place sunday evening and we hung out most of the night.</div><div><br /></div><div>i'm going to tbilisi tomorrow to get some stuff done and watch the man u. barca game. woo!</div>Andrewhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16128352015417759982noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5020886993260951793.post-46037335111473229612009-05-22T09:39:00.000-07:002009-05-22T10:08:37.350-07:00didi shtormi!big storm! sweet!<div>also, hanging out with G tomorrow! yay!</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>i have pictures but they're not loading on here.... they are on facebook if you're friends with me.</div>Andrewhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16128352015417759982noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5020886993260951793.post-86229221639098671612009-05-22T02:39:00.000-07:002009-05-22T08:40:30.447-07:00lemonade!i made lemonade and potato salad today! <div>summer is here!!!</div><div><br /><div><br /></div><div><br /></div></div>Andrewhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16128352015417759982noreply@blogger.com0
